Industrial Light & Magic OpenEXR makeMultiView.cpp Out-of-Bounds Write Vulnerability [CVE-2018-18444]

CVE Number – CVE-2018-18444

A vulnerability in Industrial Light & Magic OpenEXR could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on a targeted system.

The vulnerability is due to an out-of-bounds write condition that exists in the exrmultiview function, as defined in the makeMultiView.cpp source code file of the affected software. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by persuading a user to access an OpenEXR image file that submits malicious input to the targeted system. A successful exploit could cause an assertion failure, resulting in a DoS condition.

Proof-of-concept (PoC) code that demonstrates an exploit of this vulnerability is publicly available.

Industrial Light & Magic has not confirmed the vulnerability and software updates are not available.

Analysis

  • To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker may use misleading language and instructions to persuade a user to access an OpenEXR image file that submits malicious input to the targeted system.

Although a successful exploit could cause an assertion failure resulting in a DoS condition, it may be possible for an exploit of this vulnerability to have other unspecified impacts.
