CVE Number – CVE-2018-19409
A vulnerability in Artifex Software Ghostscript could allow a local attacker to bypass security restrictions on a targeted system.
The vulnerability exists because the affected software improperly checks the LockSafetyParamsdevice parameter if another device is used as the top device. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by making a .setdevice call on the targeted system. If another device, such as the pdf14 compositor, is the top device on the system, the attacker could bypass security restrictions on the system. A successful exploit could be used to conduct further attacks.
Artifex Software has confirmed the vulnerability and released software updates.
- To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must have user-level access to the targeted system. This access requirement could reduce the likelihood of a successful exploit.
- Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.
Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to access local systems.
Administrators are advised to allow only privileged users to access administration or management systems.
Administrators are advised to monitor critical systems.
