Transak says more than 92,000 affected by data breach
A recent data breach at cryptocurrency payment processor Transak exposed the personal information of over 92,000 individuals after an employee’s laptop was compromised.
On Sunday, the company reassured that “no financially sensitive or critical information was compromised.” However, it confirmed that the breach involved the leak of names, birthdates, passports, driver’s license details, and user selfies.
According to a statement from the Miami-based company, only about 1% of its users were affected by the breach. The incident resulted from a “sophisticated phishing attack,” which allowed the attacker to access a third-party know-your-customer vendor used by Transak for document verification.
As one of the largest cryptocurrency infrastructure providers, Transak serves nearly six million users across 160 countries and 46 U.S. states. The platform facilitates the buying and selling of over 170 types of cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for both individuals and businesses.
Transak emphasized that it operates as a fully non-custodial platform, meaning user funds—whether fiat or cryptocurrency—are never held by the company and were not impacted by the breach.
Transak said it has notified officials at the U.K.’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and other regulators in the EU and U.S, and they urged customers to contact the company if they have questions.
