Microsoft customers face more than 600 million cybercriminal and nation-state attacks every day
Microsoft has said that it’s customers face more than 600 million cybercriminal and nation-state attacks every day, ranging from ransomware to phishing to identity attacks. Once again, nation-state affiliated threat actors demonstrated that cyber operations—whether for espionage, destruction, or influence—play a persistent supporting role in broader geopolitical conflicts. Also fueling the escalation in cyberattacks, we are seeing increasing evidence of the collusion of cybercrime gangs with nation-state groups sharing tools and techniques.
The latest Microsoft Digital Defense Report, in its fifth edition, reveals a concerning trend: nation-state actors are increasingly working alongside cybercriminals, leveraging their tools and tactics for cyber operations such as espionage and influence campaigns.
The report highlights that nation-state cyberattacks are primarily focused on regions experiencing active conflict or political tensions. In addition to the U.S. and the U.K., cyber threats have also targeted Israel, Ukraine, the UAE, and Taiwan.
For instance, around 75% of Russian cyber operations were directed at Ukraine or NATO countries, reflecting Moscow’s interest in monitoring Western reactions to its actions. Meanwhile, Iran has ramped up its cyber activity since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, focusing on Israel, the U.S., and Gulf nations viewed as supporting Israel.
