UK ISPs benefit from same protections as government networks
The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has unveiled a new platform aimed at combating cybercrime and online fraud nationwide.
Introduced at the CyberUK conference in Birmingham, the Share and Defend system will provide communication providers with a list of malicious domains, enabling them to add these domains to their blocklists.
These domains are sourced from various places, including banks, commercial threat intelligence firms, and exclusive feeds accessible only to intelligence agencies.
Currently, these feeds are used to prevent government networks from connecting to known phishing sites, credential-harvesting pages, and malware command-and-control servers. By extending this protection to the public, the NCSC aims to enhance cybersecurity resilience across the entire country.
In addition to Share and Defend, the NCSC runs several other programs designed to leverage intelligence from these feeds for the benefit of the general public.
Under the Share and Defend initiative, the same blocklists that protect high-risk individuals and networks will be shared with internet service providers (ISPs) and other organizations. These entities can then integrate the domains into their own DNS platforms, aiming to provide the same level of security for ordinary internet users across the entire country.
