Data of 106 million visitors to Thailand breached

A British cyber security researcher at Comparitech has discovered an unsecure database containing the personal information of millions of visitors to Thailand, including his own.

Inside the 200GB digital index were records dating back ten years containing the personal details of more than 106 million international travellers. As per the Comparitech report, anyone who has travelled to Thailand in the last decade may have been exposed to the incident. No financial or contact information was included.

The data breach has been reported to Thai authorities, who secured the database within 24 hours and stated the exposed data was not accessed by any unauthorised parties.

The Elasticsearch database totalled about 200GB and contained several assets, including a collection of more than 106 million records, each of which included some or all of the following info:

  • Date of arrival in Thailand
  • Full name
  • Sex
  • Passport number
  • Residency status
  • Visa type
  • Thai arrival card number
