This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of Microsoft Windows. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.
The specific flaw exists within the parsing of cursor files in the user32 library. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a read past the end of an allocated buffer. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute code in the context of the current process.
Given the nature of the vulnerability the only salient mitigation strategy is to restrict interaction with the application to trusted files.
This vulnerability is being disclosed publicly without a patch in accordance with the ZDI 120 day deadline.
