Linux Kernel set_geometry Function sect and head Fields Improper Validation Vulnerability [CVE-2019-14283]

CVE number – CVE-2019-14283

A vulnerability in the Linux Kernel could allow a local attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on a targeted system. The vulnerability exists because the set_geometry function, as defined in the drivers/block/floppy.csource code file of the affected software, does not properly validate the sect and head fields. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by inserting a floppy disk that submits malicious input to the targeted system. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause an integer overflow condition, which could cause an out-of-bounds write condition that the attacker could use to execute arbitrary code or cause a DoS condition. Kernel.org has confirmed the vulnerability and released software updates.

Analysis

  • To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must have user-level access and be able to insert a floppy disk into the targeted system. This access requirement may reduce the likelihood of a successful exploit.

Safeguards

  • Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to access local systems.

Administrators are advised to allow only privileged users to access administration or management systems.

Administrators are advised to monitor critical systems.
