Instagram and WhatsApp To Be Renamed

Facebook who owns both Instagram and WhatsApp plans to rename the apps to “Instagram from Facebook” and “WhatsApp from Facebook,” according to The Information, which cites anonymous sources. Facebook has owned Instagram since 2012, and WhatsApp since 2014.

The new names will appear in Apple’s App Store and Google Play. The report says that the new name will be displayed only on the app store pages on both Android and iOS. The new names will also be visible on the login pages.

Facebook spokeswoman Bertie Thompson said “We want to be clearer about the products and services that are part of Facebook” after confirming the massive rebranding.

According to a 2018 survey, 57 percent of Americans didn’t know Instagram is owned by Facebook, and another one showed 50 percent don’t know the company owns WhatsApp. So will this effect how people use the apps, only time will tell.
