GNU patch Symlinks Following Vulnerability [CVE-2019-13636]

CVE number – CVE-2019-13636

A vulnerability in GNU patch could allow a local attacker to gain unauthorized access to files or directories on a targeted system.

The vulnerability exists because the affected software mishandles the following of symlinks in certain cases other than input files and affects the inp.c and util.c source code files of the software. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to gain unauthorized access to read or modify files and directories on a targeted system. A successful exploit could be used to conduct further attacks. 

GNU has confirmed the vulnerability and released software updates.

  • To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must have user-level access to the targeted system. This access requirement could reduce the likelihood of a successful exploit
