What is HTTPS ?

HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure. It is a technology that ensures secure communication over a computer network, widely used on the Internet. In HTTPS, information is encrypted using Transport Layer Security (TLS), advanced level of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).

Web browsers know how to trust HTTPS websites based on certificate authorities that come pre-installed in their software. Certificate authorities (such as Let’s Encrypt, Digicert, Comodo, GoDaddy and GlobalSign) are in this way being trusted by web browser creators to provide valid certificates.

To view a HTTPS certificate you click the padlock symbol, next to the web address in the browser bar ( as per example below with google.com )
