Linux Kernel fs/f2fs/inline.c Denial of Service Vulnerability [CVE-2018-13099]

CVE Number – CVE-2018-13099

A vulnerability in the Linux Kernel could allow a local attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on a targeted system.

The vulnerability exists in the fs/f2fs/inline.c source code file of the affected software. An out-of-bounds memory access condition could occur on a modified Flash-Friendly File System (F2FS) image that contains an inline inode with an invalid reserved block address. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by mounting and performing operations on a crafted F2FS image on a targeted system. A successful exploit could trigger a use-after-free condition in the update_sit_entry()function, causing the affected software to crash and resulting in a DoS condition.

Proof-of-concept (PoC) code that demonstrates an exploit of this vulnerability is publicly available.

Kernel.org has confirmed the vulnerability and released software updates.

Analysis
  • To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must have user-level access to the targeted system. This access requirement could reduce the likelihood of a successful exploit.
Safeguards
  • Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.

Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to access local systems.

Administrators are advised to allow only privileged users to access administration or management systems.

Administrators are advised to monitor critical systems.
