Linux Kernel ext4_iget Function Denial of Service Vulnerability [CVE-2018-1092]

A vulnerability in the ext4_iget function of the Linux Kernel could allow a local attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected system.

The vulnerability is due to improper processing of a customized ext4 image by the affected software when the ext4_iget function, as defined in the fs/ext4/inode.c source code file, is used. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by mounting a customized ext4 image to the affected system. An exploit could trigger a NULL pointer dereference condition and an Out-of-Process Space (OOPS) kernel memory error, which could cause a kernel panic, resulting in a DoS condition.

Proof-of-concept code that demonstrates an exploit of this vulnerability is publicly available.

Kernel.org has confirmed the vulnerability and released a software patch.
