GNU Binutils bfd_section_from_shdr Function Denial of Service Vulnerability [CVE-2018-8945]
A vulnerability in the elf.c source code of GNU Binutils could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on a targeted system.
The vulnerability is in the bfd_section_from_shdr function and is due to improper bounds checking that is performed by the affected software. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by submitting a crafted file to the affected software. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause a DoS condition on the system.
Proof-of-concept code that demonstrates an exploit of this vulnerability is publicly available.
The vendor has confirmed the vulnerability and released a software patch.
